The Importance of Screening
Early detection of vascular disease helps prevent serious complications. Cramping, throbbing, and tingling in the legs can be signs of a more serious venous disease. That is why screening is such an important first step in determining the extent of your vein health issue.
Our screening center is fully staffed by registered vascular technologists (RVTs), who are dedicated to the noninvasive diagnosis and treatment of vascular disorders. All our technologists are specifically trained and certified in vascular-specific diagnostics and conduct more than 3,600 tests each year. All exams are supervised and interpreted by our board-certified vascular surgeons.
The Advanced Vein Center at Oregon Surgical Specialists offers the most extensive array of diagnostic tools in the region for the diagnosis of all venous-related health issues.
Diagnosing Venous Disease
History and Physical:
Your doctor will ask you a series of questions related to your symptoms and perform a pointed physical exam. Be sure to include all of your symptoms, how long they have been occurring, any treatment you have had in the past and all medications you are currently taking. Common symptoms of venous disease include:
- Cramping, throbbing and burning sensation of the legs
- Swelling of the lower legs
- Thick, rope-like veins on the surface of the legs
- Pain increase throughout the day with prolong standing or sitting
- Hyperpigmentation around the ankles and calves
- Skin ulcers around the ankles and calves
Doppler Ultrasound:
Doppler Ultrasound is a quick and painless exam completed in your doctor’s office to diagnose venous insufficiency. It is capable of examining the veins, valves and blood flow. If the ultrasound shows that blood is flowing both up and down the legs then you have venous insufficiency. The veins are not working correctly causing varicose veins.
